about

The last of the Late Night Sessions trilogy* from incomparable pianist-composer Belle Chen, ‘New Dawn’ is a bridge back to reality.

With nuanced real-life sounds laced throughout the album, this set of work draws inspiration from observations of real life scenes in London, one year on from the pandemic outbreak.

Scored for piano, synths, electric pianos and sound design, this collection of work shares a sense of stillness, reflection, yet warmth and optimism, like being touched by the sun at dawn.

*The Late Night trilogy consists of 1 EP and 2 albums, all created during 2020-2021 and reflecting the artist’s response to real-life events during the pandemic: ‘At Home’ (released 27 November 2020), ‘The Storyteller’ (released 2nd April 2021), and ‘New Dawn’ (release on 25 June 2021)

Track Highlights:

Time Travelling Sirens 2013-2021 is a collage of four recordings of sirens from London from 2013 to 2021, artificially stitched together to form a sense of a singular siren travelling through four different spaces.

At That Moment, I Felt pays tribute to Impressionist composers Debussy and Ravel, travelling through a wide range of events and emotions in fast sequences. At times still, at times running freely.

Three Short Scenes (Dandelion, Empty Cathedrals, Sun Glitter) are inspired by observing London at the onset of Spring 2021, where news of vaccination roll-out occupied the Capital.

New Dawn is scored for piano, electric piano and synths. Taking inspiration from Japanese city pop genre of 1970s and 80s, the track opens with lyrical solo piano line, eventually opening up and erupting into a chorus of keyboards, before the listener is airdropped onto the streets of a waking city.

Elegy is written for all those who lost someone during this past year.

Reset is performed on a virtual analogue synth, beginning with evocations of the church organ, and ending with layers of rhythms inspired by medical machinery and instruments.

I Just Wanted to Tell You takes the form of an instrumental pop song, where the right hand melody line evokes and copies patterns of spoken words. Bittersweet and warm, the final words were not spoken until towards the end.

New Normals is an improvised track, in search of the meaning of ‘normality’
